Neuromotor task training for children with DCD

Why Neuromotor task training (NTT) for children with DCD

In recent years there has been a shift towards training methods with a more task-oriented approach in the treatment of children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), such as Neuromotor Task Training (NTT). This shift is the result of scientific research. In NTT training specific motor tasks or skills will be trained that a child has problems with. There will also be the translation to comparable skills and to other situations (home or school). However, this approach is not bound to the group of children with DCD. NTT can be an adequate approach to all motor problems.

Meant for whom

You are a physiotherapist, occupational therapist or exercise therapist and you work with DCD children. It is your ambition to acquire the skills to make a task analysis of NTT in order to achieve better results with your patients. Moreover, you would like to learn how to ‘play with training material’ by applying it in practice, so you will be able to deal methodically with training material and have many possibilities to differentiate.

The program

The eventual goal of the treatment is to ensure that the movement problems interfere minimally with school skills and activities within the family or leisure time. The movement and behavioral disorders of this group of children and their origins are very diverse. That makes more than one treatment possible; one single prescription treatment for the whole group of children does not exist.

The following parts will be addressed:
+ Guidelines for common types of children
+ Problem analysis adapted to the individual child
+ Diagnostics, task analysis and treatment plan
+ Working out the treatment

Methodology

The training consists of practical assignments supported by theory. You will, supervised by a competent teacher, work on making a treatment plan and working out the treatment.

Time investment

The training will take nine one-day meetings. The first day is an introduction, serving as foundation for the subsequent meetings. You will also have to take into account some studying at home in preparation of the meetings. The total study load is approximately 126 hours.

The result

After the training you will have mastered the basic principles of NTT and you will be able to make a problem and task analysis. You will be able to come up with suitable practice material for every individual child and apply it.

The diploma

If you have successfully completed the training, you will receive a certificate.

Location of the training and start period

These trainings are offered in-company. Location and dates will be determined in consultation with the parties involved. Please contact an Avans+
